Gifts of Cash

Whether contributing to capital improvements or daily programs and activities, it’s easy to improve the lives of your loved ones and all Santa Maria residents. We welcome one time, lump sum, and monthly donations as cash or cheques.

  • Put a donation envelope in the mail slot in the Administration Office door (if stopping by after-hours).

Memorial Donations and “In lieu of Flowers”

When honouring the memory of someone special, consider naming our Santa Maria Foundation (our legal name) in a death notice or obituary.

When someone special passes, it is only natural that friends and family want to give a tangible sign of respect for the departed and their mourning family. Today, many families direct donations to a charity of choice in lieu of flowers. Please consider naming the Santa Maria Foundation when completing an “in lieu of flowers” statement in a death announcement. It is a nice way to recognize the important work our caring staff have done for you and your loved one.

Gifts of Goods and Services

Various donated goods and services create comfort and joy in the lives of residents. Such gifts are especially valuable in making capital improvements. Examples include some types of therapeutic equipment (e.g., a gently used Broda chair). For health and safety reasons, we must carefully decide what gifts to accept. To determine whether your donation can be accepted to enhance the lives of residents, please contact our Executive Director.

Gift in a Will

With planning, your Will can provide for your family and enrich the lives of Santa Maria residents. To ensure your wishes are fulfilled, seek professional advice from your lawyer, financial planner, and/or estate planner for options for your gift and the right language for your Will. Talking to your loved ones and Santa Maria Foundation about your plans is also helpful to all.

Options for a gift in a Will, sometimes called a bequest, include leaving a particular sum of money, a specific asset such as property, or a certain percentage of your estate. Your estate will receive a charitable receipt for the gift, which reduces the taxes owed.

Gift of Life Insurance

Those with an interest in enhancing the quality of life of others may name charitable organizations, like Santa Maria Foundation, as beneficiaries. If you like the idea of making a charitable donation via life insurance, options include:

  • Designating our Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy that you no longer need. You will receive a charitable receipt for the policy’s cash surrender value. If further payments are required, you will receive a charitable donation receipt for the payments you make after the Foundation becomes the owner and beneficiary.
  • Donating a new policy purchased with our Foundation as the owner and beneficiary. If you choose this option, you will receive a charitable donation receipt for the full amount of all premiums paid.
  • Naming us as beneficiary of a policy enables the death benefits to be paid directly to us. This entitles your estate to a charitable donation receipt, avoids probate taxes, and minimizes the risk of creditor claims against the estate.

We recommend discussing life insurance options with your family and professional advisors.

Gifts of Shares or Mutual Funds

Transferring securities to our Foundation eliminates capital gains tax. This generates greater tax saving than if you sold the securities and then donated the cash proceeds.

Before you donate securities in the form of shares or mutual funds, we recommend you seek professional advice from your tax or financial advisor.

Gifts of Real Estate

It is possible to donate property, buildings, land or a residence that you own. Your options for gifts of real estate are:

  • making an outright or immediate donation
  • providing a gift in a Will or
  • selling real estate, then donating the proceeds

Gifts of RRSPs, RRIFS, TFSAs

Your estate is entitled to a charitable donation receipt when you name our Foundation as the direct beneficiary of a RRSP, RRIF or TFSA. The receipt equals the amount paid to us upon your death. This option avoids probate taxes and minimizes the risk of creditor claims against the estate. Setting up such a donation is as simple as asking your financial advisor or financial institution to change the beneficiary to Santa Maria Foundation.
