Spiritual Care

What is Spiritual Care?

Spiritual Care is a ministry to help others experience, as fully as possible, the reality of God’s presence and love. This may happen through words, actions and companionship. Spiritual support covers a number of different services and contact types.

  1. Regular visitation and “check ins” by staff and/or volunteers are the most common and perhaps the most important ways of ensuring the spiritual well-being of our residents. Presence and listening are two expressions of caring that contribute to the maintenance of health.
  2. Physical presence, which is sensitive to one’s needs, encourages the awareness that one is not alone. Knowing that someone is prepared to be present and supportive can be a comfort in times of transition.
  3. When a person’s health is failing, the loss of independence may lead them to ponder the meaning of life and search for answers, for peace and for God. Spiritual Care can be a companion who listens non-judgementally to their story and journey with them. This process may help with acceptance of the situation.
  4. Spiritual Care collaborates with the nursing department to ensure that the resident’s Advance Care Directive is completed and up to date. We are also available as a resource to help with the understanding of an Advance Care Directive.
  5. At the end of life, Spiritual Care is frequently called upon to provide additional support to the resident and family during the dying process. This includes grief support and help in the planning of a funeral or celebration of life in our chapel.

Spiritual Care begins when the residents first arrive to our home. Spiritual needs and desires of all faith traditions are identified and a personalized plan is established. Support is ongoing during the resident’s time with us up to and including end of life care.

The Director of Spiritual Care and Mission Effectiveness is on site at Santa Maria from Sunday to Thursday each week and on call (please ask the nurse) after hours.

“Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak.”

These words from St. Anthony of Padua (Patron Saint of the Elderly) reflect the Mission of Santa Maria.

We strive to lead by example, inspired by the life and ministry of Jesus.

Chapel Schedule

Santa Maria offers regularly scheduled services and events to support the spiritual well -being of our residents. Our beautiful chapel can accommodate up to 115 people. Two priest chaplains have been assigned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina to celebrate Mass and to provide sacraments throughout the year.

Below is a list of regular services held in the chapel:

  • Mass is offered every Sunday at 10:00 a.m., Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m. and every other Thursday.
  • Friends from the Lutheran and United Church communities lead a service each month.
  • A non-denominational prayer service is held monthly (on each nursing unit).
  • On Wednesday mornings, residents gather in the chapel for the Rosary or other services specific for the season.
  • Sacrament of the Sick (anointing) is offered to our Catholic residents twice a year or by individual request through Spiritual Care.
  • Reconciliation with a priest is arranged by Spiritual Care upon request.
  • A memorial service honoring recently deceased residents is held in March and September each year.
  • The chapel is open for use by all faith traditions and spiritual practices. It is also available for quiet meditation when it is not in use for scheduled services.
